Sustainability

Sustainable coffee is in our DNA and at the core of how we aim to operate.

We ensure that all our coffee is ethically and sustainably sourced but also gives back to our planet - by planting trees.

coffee sustainability

Simply put, for every bag of coffee sold, we plant 1x tree.

We partner with Ecologi as our official tree-planting partner across a variety of projects around the world.

Whether it's the Eden Reforestation project in Kenya, or the Trees for Future project in Uganda, we work to support current and new tree-planting initiatives across the world and it's built into the core of our business model.

Why is planting trees so important for the planet?

We believe planting trees is a powerful tool in the fight against climate change and in the preservation of the planet's biodiversity and ecological balance. It's an action that individuals, communities, and governments can take to make a positive impact on the environment through 4 key pillars:

  1. Carbon Sequestration: Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) during photosynthesis, a process in which they convert sunlight into chemical energy. This helps to mitigate the effects of climate change by removing excess CO2 from the atmosphere.
  2. Air Quality Improvement & Oxygen Production& Oxygen Production: Trees filter the air by trapping dust and absorbing pollutants from the atmosphere. They can help improve air quality in urban areas, which is crucial for human health. Through photosynthesis, trees release oxygen, which is vital for all living organisms. One mature tree can produce enough oxygen for up to four people in a day.
  3. Biodiversity: Trees provide habitats and food sources for a wide variety of species. Forests are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, and they support countless forms of life, from insects to mammals.
  4. Climate & Water Cycle Regulation: Forests and trees influence local and global climates. They provide shade and reduce temperatures in urban areas (a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect), and they contribute to regional climate stability.
Trees play a vital role in regulating the water cycle. They absorb water through their roots and release it through a process called transpiration, which helps maintain stable local and global climates.

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a practice aimed at compensating for the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) or other greenhouse gases produced by one entity (like a company or an individual) by investing in projects or activities that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of emissions elsewhere. The goal is to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint.

We also work with our partners at Ecologi to support a variety of climate initiatives to offset some our own carbon emissions produced.

Some of these projects include Wind, Solar & turning organic waste into electricity (just to name a few).

How sustainable is coffee?

Coffee sustainability involves various factors, including environmental impact, social practices, and economic considerations. Socially, fair trade certifications seek to ensure fair wages and labour standards. Economic viability involves stabilising prices and encouraging diversification. Climate change resilience strategies are crucial, and consumer choices can drive positive change. Overall, sustainability in the coffee industry is a complex and evolving effort that requires attention to environmental, social, and economic dimensions. That's why at Twigs Coffee Ltd we mark planting trees a core part of our business strategy. So that we enable every consumer to be more sustainable by planting 1x tree for every purchase.
